About Chhattisgarh Institute of Technology (CGIT), Jagdalpur
History and Background
For the 2025-26 session the Chhattisgarh government upgraded the college as Chhattisgarh Institute of Technology (CGIT), Jagdalpur. It was formerly Government Engineering College, Jagdalpur (also called GEC Bastar, and Jhada Sirha Government Engineering College). New B.Tech branches in Computer Science and Engineering (AI and ML) and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence were added, and they appear in the 2026-27 CG DTE counselling lists. Government Engineering College, Jagdalpur, at Dharampura in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, opened on 1 March 1983. It was set up by the then Madhya Pradesh government to train young people from the tribal Bastar region in engineering, and is now run by the Chhattisgarh government. The college began with just 20 seats in civil engineering. Mechanical engineering followed in 1984, electronics and telecommunication and information technology in 2000, and electrical engineering in 2005-06. Mining engineering was added later, and in 2010 civil and ET&T intake was raised to 60. GEC Jagdalpur is affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU), Bhilai, and is approved by AICTE and recognised by the state Directorate of Technical Education. It now offers six B.E./B.Tech branches (Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Electrical, Information Technology and Mining) and two M.Tech programmes, Structural Engineering and Thermal Engineering, with 18 seats each. The civil engineering department also offers soil and material testing and consultancy for infrastructure work in the region.
