About Yadava College
History and Background
About Yadava College, Madurai Yadava College is an autonomous, co-educational arts and science college on the Govindarajan Campus at Thiruppalai, on the northern edge of Madurai. Its story starts in 1962, when a group of Yadava community members set up the Yadava Educational Fund (Yadhavar Kalvi Nidhi) to give scholarships and books to poor students. Seeing how few of those students reached higher education, the fund opened the college in 1969. For many years it was run only on donations from Yadava families across the country. The first classes were two pre-university courses held in a temporary building. The same year, the Tamil Nadu government allotted about 39.5 acres at Thiruppalai, where the campus stands today. Since 1971 the college has been run by a management elected from the fund's general body. Anyone from the community who paid the life membership fee could join that body. The college is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University and has both government-aided and self-financing streams. It now offers 21 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate programmes, four research programmes, and 17 job-oriented certificate and diploma courses. On top of these, 17 certificate courses are offered free. Several departments are recognised as research centres and offer full-time and part-time Ph.D. programmes. About 147 teachers work at the college. Admissions to UG and PG programmes open each year on the college website. Yadava College also holds academic events with partner institutions, such as a 2025 international conference on science, technology, management and public health held with AIMT. It began as a community effort, but it is now open to all students.
