About Wilson College

History and Background

About Wilson College, Mumbai Wilson College is one of the oldest colleges in India. Scottish missionary Rev. John Wilson founded it in 1832, 25 years before the University of Mumbai existed. It grew out of the Ambroli English School in Girgaum, which went through several sites and names, and a collegiate section was added in 1836. On 14 December 1861, as the Free General Assembly's Institution, it became the first privately run, non-government institution to be affiliated to the university. The present building faces Girgaon Chowpatty. It was built in 1889 to a design by John Adams in a domestic Victorian Gothic style and is a Grade III heritage structure. Its large first-floor classrooms have teakwood trusses and open onto deep verandahs that look over the beach. Rev. Dugald Mackichan, who had worked with Lord Kelvin, later served as principal until 1920 and set up the physics laboratory. India Post issued a special cover for the college in 2004 and a stamp for its 175th year in 2007. Since 1963 the college has been managed by the John Wilson Education Society. It is a Christian minority institution linked to the Church of North India and admits students from all communities. NAAC accredited it with an A grade in 2004, 2011 and 2017, and it became autonomous in 2021, so it now sets its own syllabus and exams while remaining affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in arts, science and the self-financing stream, including the B.A. in Multimedia and Mass Communication (BAMMC), are taught here. Campus life has a long record too. The Wiseacres Club, started by former teacher Dr E.G.K. Hewat, still gives students a place for literary work, and the college runs an equal opportunity cell for students with disabilities. Its motto is "Fides, Spes, Caritas", meaning faith, hope and love.
