About Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), Delhi Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was set up by the Government of India in November 2001 at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, and its first MBBS batch was admitted in February 2002. The college and the hospital work as one Central Government organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and VMMC is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. The hospital is much older than the college. Safdarjung began in 1942 as a base hospital during the Second World War and was taken over by the Government of India in 1954. It started with 204 beds and now has more than 1,500, with OPD attendance of over ten lakh patients a year. That patient load is the main reason students choose VMMC Delhi, because clinical exposure starts early and stays heavy through internship. Postgraduate training in clinical subjects was running at Safdarjung long before VMMC existed. The college now offers: MBBS MD and MS in subjects such as Anaesthesiology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine and Microbiology Super speciality training in departments including Cardiology, CTVS, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Burns and Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Surgery MBBS admission is through NEET-UG, with seats filled by central and Delhi counselling, and MD and MS seats are filled through NEET-PG. VMMC has appeared among the top medical colleges in the NIRF rankings. The campus also runs fellowships, observerships and short courses such as a pre-hospital trauma assistant programme.
