About University College of Law - Osmania University

History and Background

About University College of Law, Osmania University, Hyderabad Law teaching at Osmania goes back further than the university itself. A "Law class" opened in Hyderabad in 1899, along with Judicial Test classes for judicial officers, nearly two decades before Osmania University was founded in 1918. In 1923 these classes were replaced by a Law Department at the Arts College, which at first taught in Urdu, then the court language, using textbooks translated by the university's Translation Bureau. An LL.M. course followed in 1942. Demand for seats kept growing, and in 1950 the department became a full law college, first at Saifabad Science College and from 1954 in the Chadarghat College building on Tilak Road, with English as the medium of instruction. The UGC sanctioned Rs 8 lakh in 1958 for a building on the main campus, and the University College of Law there was inaugurated in 1960 by Chief Justice of India B.P. Sinha. Prof. G.C.V. Subba Rao was its first principal. The Ph.D. programme began in 1978. The college now admits 120 LL.B. students a year, split between the three-year and five-year courses, in sections of no more than 60 as Bar Council of India rules require. Courses include: LL.B. three-year and five-year integrated degree courses LL.M. in Constitutional Law, Corporate Law and Labour Law, plus self-financing branches such as IPR, ADR, and Criminology and Criminal Justice PG diplomas in Cyber Laws, Insurance and Taxation Laws, and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Laws Ph.D. in law, regular and part-time Admission to the LL.B. is through the state LAWCET, and to the LL.M. through the PGLCET, strictly on entrance merit with statutory reservations. Alumni include Supreme Court judges such as Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy and Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, and political figures such as Shivraj Patil. The library holds an Intellectual Property Rights depository funded by the central government.
