About University College of Law - Karnatak University

History and Background

About University College of Law - Karnatak University, Dharwad The University College of Law at Karnatak University opened in 1962, together with the university's Post Graduate Department of Law. Both came out of a plan by Wrangler Dr. D. C. Pavate, then Vice-Chancellor, to build a model law school for north Karnataka that could grow into a centre for advanced legal study. The college has since been renamed Sir Siddappa Kambali Law College, but many students and lawyers in the region still know it by its old name. It is a constituent college of Karnatak University, Dharwad, a state university created under the Karnatak University Act of 1949 that became a statutory university on 1 March 1950. For most of its history the law college and the PG law department have worked as one unit, with the department's chairman also serving as principal of the college. A separate law campus inside the university grounds at Pavate Nagar was completed in November 1976. Programmes cover the main routes into the legal profession: Five-year B.A. LL.B. after Class 12 Three-year LL.B. after graduation Two-year full-time LL.M., now offered in Constitutional Law and Corporate Law When the LL.M. began, it offered specialisations in Mercantile Law and Labour Law with a faculty of nine teachers. Admission to the LL.B. and B.A. LL.B. courses is handled by Karnatak University, which publishes an admission notification each year with eligibility, seat matrix and counselling dates. Students who want an LL.B. or B.A. LL.B. in Dharwad should watch that notice, as seats are filled strictly by the university's schedule.
