About TOMS College of Engineering and Polytechnic
History and Background
About TOMS College of Engineering and Polytechnic, Kottayam TOMS College of Engineering is at Mattakara in Kottayam district, Kerala. The group behind it started in 1988 as the Visveswaraya Institute of Engineering Technology (VIET), a coaching centre for the AMIE engineering exams. VIET entered the Limca Book of Records in 2007 for the most All India Ranks in AMIE, and the group says its students have won over 1,177 such ranks. The engineering college itself opened in 2014 with AICTE approval, promoted by the Thirunilam Educational Trust, which was registered in 2011. The B.Tech programmes are now affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), and the college has been accredited by NAAC since 2023. In 2019 a polytechnic wing was added, approved by the AICTE and the Directorate of Technical Education, Kerala. The group also runs an aviation training institute with DGCA approval and, from 2024, an arts and science college affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. Courses on the campus include: B.Tech in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical and Computer Science Engineering Diplomas in Civil, Chemical, Computer Science, Automobile, Cyber Forensics, Electrical and Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering Each B.Tech branch has 60 seats, split equally between government and management quota. Government seats are filled through KEAM, the Kerala engineering entrance, and applicants need at least 45 percent aggregate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or an allowed alternative subject. Diploma holders can move into the B.Tech through lateral entry. The college reports that it has ranked among the top private colleges in KTU results and has set a goal of placing every student in the 2026 batch. Its director, Dr. Paul A. J., is a former senior scientist at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
