About Thiagarajar College
History and Background
About Thiagarajar College, Madurai Thiagarajar College on Kamarajar Salai is one of Madurai's oldest arts and science colleges. It was founded on 7 July 1949 by Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, who called it "a small and humble endeavour in education". The then Governor of Madras State, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, formally opened it on 12 October that year. The college's motto is "Wisdom and Love embody the Divine". It is a private, aided, co-educational college affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, and it is managed by the Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust. It became autonomous in 1987, so it sets its own syllabus and exams through its own Controller of Examinations. Its accreditation record is long. NAAC gave it Five Stars in the first round in 2001 and an A grade in 2007 and 2013, and it now holds an A++ grade from the fourth cycle. NAAC has also listed it as a high-performing institution, extending its accreditation validity from five to seven years. The college started with three undergraduate courses. It now runs 28 UG, 12 PG, 11 M.Phil. and 10 Ph.D. programmes, along with 13 diploma and 16 certificate courses in the arts, sciences, commerce and computer applications, including MCA. Faculty members get research grants from UGC, DST, CSIR, DRDO and other agencies. In 2025 its Institution's Innovation Council received a two-star rating. The campus has acres of green space and hosts events such as the annual Pulavar Vizhaa, which reached its 77th edition in 2026. A placement cell has been working since 2003. For students in south Tamil Nadu looking at B.A., B.Sc or B.Com admission at an autonomous aided college, Thiagarajar has more than 75 years of history behind it.
