About Thiagarajar College of Engineering
History and Background
About Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) was founded in 1957 by Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, an industrialist and philanthropist from Madurai. Its main campus covers about 136 acres at Thiruparankundram in Madurai. The University of Madras affiliated its first B.E. courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 1958. The college's history follows the growth of higher education in the region. When Madurai University was formed in 1966, TCE moved its affiliation there, and that university later became Madurai Kamaraj University. TCE received autonomous status in 1987, which makes it one of the older autonomous engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. In 1997 NBA accredited its main B.E. programmes, two M.E. programmes and its MCA. Today it is affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE. Programmes now offered include: B.E. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, and Electronics and Communication Engineering B.E. Computer Science and Engineering, B.Tech Information Technology and B.E. Mechatronics B.Arch, along with M.E., MCA and M.Sc courses PhD research across engineering, architecture and the sciences B.E. and B.Tech seats are filled through TNEA counselling based on Class 12 marks. B.Arch applicants need a NATA score. Postgraduate admission uses TANCET or GATE. TCE also has a long-running consultancy wing, TEMCOS, which it started in 1975 for engineering and management projects.
