About The University School of Design University of Mysore
History and Background
About The University School of Design, University of Mysore, Mysore The University School of Design (USD) was set up by the University of Mysore in 2002 to teach architecture, starting with a B.Arch and an M.Arch in Urban Design. In 2015–16 the university combined it with the urban and regional planning courses of its Institute of Development Studies, which had run an M.Tech in Urban and Regional Planning and a Ph.D. since 1971. The merged unit is now called the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), University of Mysore, with a Department of Architecture and a Department of Planning. The architecture courses that began at USD are recognised by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi, and the planning courses by the Institute of Town Planners, India. India Today ranked the school seventh nationally in 2021. Programmes offered today are: Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) M.Arch in Urban Design M.Tech in Urban and Regional Planning Ph.D. in planning and architecture The school works out of its own purpose-built block inside the University of Mysore campus at Manasagangotri. The site covers about 15 acres, and the building has around 84,000 sq ft of floor space. It holds 18 studio-cum-lecture halls. There is also a library, a computer lab with design software, Wi-Fi throughout, a 350-seat auditorium, a 1,500-capacity amphitheatre, faculty rooms, a stationery shop, a cafe and canteen, and space for sports. As a university department rather than a private college, SPA Mysore follows the University of Mysore's admission rules and academic calendar, and its degrees are awarded by the university. B.Arch candidates must meet the Council of Architecture's eligibility norms, which include a valid aptitude test score in architecture.
