About The New College
History and Background
About The New College, Chennai The New College stands on Peter's Road in Royapettah, in the middle of Chennai. It was set up in 1951 by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI), and its stated purpose has stayed fairly constant since then: to open higher education to young people from modest and underprivileged backgrounds. It is a government-aided, autonomous arts and science college affiliated to the University of Madras. In its fourth NAAC cycle the college was re-accredited with an A++ grade and a CGPA of 3.61 out of 4. Being autonomous, it sets its own syllabus and conducts its own semester examinations, with continuous internal assessment through the year. The college is large. Over 6,100 students and 313 teachers work across 27 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate programmes, and 11 departments are approved for Ph.D. research. Classes run in two shifts, each with its own students' union and cultural programme. Programmes include: B.A. and M.A. programmes B.Com General and B.Com Corporate Secretaryship, BBA and BCA B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Biology M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in several science subjects Facilities on the campus include laboratories, ICT-enabled classrooms, seminar halls, a multipurpose auditorium, a central library, a hostel and grounds for sports. A Career Guidance and Placement Cell brings recruiters for campus drives, including TCS. Applications for UG and PG admission are filed online with the college, which publishes its own schedule each year. For 2026–27, the last date for applications was 31 August 2026.
