About Surendranath College

History and Background

About Surendranath College, Kolkata Surendranath College, at 24/2 Mahatma Gandhi Road in central Kolkata, is one of the city's oldest colleges, and its history is tied to the freedom movement. In 1882 Surendranath Banerjea, the nationalist leader, orator and founder of the Indian National Association, took charge of a school called Presidency School. In January 1884 it became the Presidency Institution, affiliated to the University of Calcutta at the Intermediate level. Later that year, with Lord Ripon's permission, it was renamed Ripon College and became a full degree college. Banerjea taught there himself for many years. The trustees gave it its present name in 1948-49 in his honour. Several institutions grew out of the college. Its law department, started in 1885, became Ripon Law College in 1911. A commerce department opened in 1940, and a branch at Dinajpur (now in Bangladesh) followed in 1942. The evening science section added in 1947 is now part of Surendranath Evening College, and the women's section opened in 1948 became a separate college in 1960. UGC recognised the college in 1972. Today it is affiliated to the University of Calcutta, accredited by NAAC with a B++ grade (2.98), ISO 9001:2015 certified, and supported under RUSA, the DST BOOST scheme and the DBT Star College scheme.
