History and Background
About St Thomas' College of Engineering & Technology, Kolkata St. Thomas' College of Engineering and Technology (STCET) opened on 29 August 2000 at 4 Diamond Harbour Road, Kidderpore, in south-west Kolkata. The Calcutta Diocesan Educational Trust runs it. The college is approved by AICTE and affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), West Bengal. The university sets the syllabus and awards the B.Tech degree. NBA has accredited some of its programmes. STCET publishes its approval, affiliation and accreditation documents on its website. It is a compact, city-centre college, and its course list is focused rather than long. B.Tech programmes include: Computer Science and Engineering Information Technology Electronics and Communication Engineering Electrical Engineering Admission to the first year is through WBJEE counselling, run by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board, and JEE Main scores are accepted for some seats. Diploma holders can join in the second year through the state's lateral entry test. The college says it aims to be industry-oriented and research-based, with emphasis on ethics and on technologies suited to India's needs. Students have a central library and information centre, and a language practice laboratory for communication skills.
