About St Mary College
History and Background
About St Mary College, Sulthan Bathery St. Mary's College in Sulthan Bathery was the first higher education institution in Wayanad district. It was founded in 1965 by Rev. Fr. Mathai Nooranal of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Kottayam-based church credited with starting Cotym College at its seminary, often described as the first institution of higher education in India. For a hill district that long had few options, the college opened up degree education close to home. The campus covers 32 acres on Kuppadi hills, inside the Sulthan Bathery municipal town and about 2 km from the Kozhikode-Kollegal National Highway. It is close to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Nilgiri, Banasura Sagar and Edakkal hills are visible from the grounds. The built-up area of around 2.5 lakh sq ft includes three girls' hostels and a boys' hostel, along with a higher secondary school and a high school run under the college's name. St. Mary's is affiliated to the University of Calicut. It offers 11 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate programmes and has 4 research centres where students can work towards a Ph.D. Course areas include: B.A. and M.A. programmes in humanities and languages B.Sc and M.Sc in science subjects B.Com and M.Com BBA and BCA Undergraduate and postgraduate admission follows the University of Calicut's centralised allotment process, while forms for management and community seats are available from the college office. The campus also has a grievance cell, an anti-discrimination complaint cell and support for students who want to take MOOCs alongside their regular B.Com, BBA, BCA or B.Sc course.
