History and Background
About Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science was started in 1964 on the Vidyalaya campus at Periyanaickenpalayam, on the northern side of Coimbatore. The Vidyalaya itself began in 1930 as a school with one student under a thatched roof. Its founder, Dr T.S. Avinashilingam, built it up with a small group of teachers, and Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation stone on 7 February 1934. It became part of the Ramakrishna Mission in January 1935. Today the Vidyalaya campus covers close to 300 acres and runs institutions from pre-school to doctoral level, including schools, an agriculture institute and a college of physical education. The campus also has a dispensary, a post office and a State Bank of India branch. The arts and science college is one of the larger units here and is managed by the Ramakrishna Mission, with Swami Garishthananda serving as secretary of the Vidyalaya since 2017. The college is autonomous and affiliated to Bharathiar University. NAAC re-accredited it with an A+ grade in 2023. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, as well as value-added and skill courses. Its main programmes are: B.A. English Literature, B.Com and BCA B.Sc. in science and computing subjects M.Com, MCA and M.Sc. M.Phil. and Ph.D. research Teaching follows the ideas of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda and Gandhi, and the college puts clear weight on discipline and character training. The college also hosts academic events, such as an online international conference on data science using AI held in September 2026. Applications for UG, PG and research programmes are made directly to the college through its admission portal.
