About Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGS) stands on a 15-acre campus in Sector 26, Chandigarh. The Sikh Educational Society, a body first formed in Lahore in 1936, opened it in 1966 as a memorial marking the tercentenary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Partap Singh Kairon, then Chief Minister of Punjab, had laid the foundation stone on 29 August 1963. The first batch had 240 students and 18 teachers, studying pre-university classes and three-year B.A. and B.Sc courses. A year later enrolment had crossed 1,000. SGGS was the first co-educational college in Chandigarh and the districts around it, and the college insignia was designed by the painter Sobha Singh. Today the college is affiliated to Panjab University and has more than 6,000 students and about 170 teachers, over a hundred of whom hold a Ph.D. NAAC has re-accredited it with an A grade (CGPA 3.07). Its programmes cover arts, sciences, commerce, computer applications and management: Three regular undergraduate courses, including B.A., B.Sc and B.Com Five professional undergraduate courses, such as BCA and BBA Eleven regular postgraduate courses, among them M.A. History and M.A. Economics Four professional postgraduate courses A Ph.D. programme in Economics, plus vocational and certificate courses Admission is made under Panjab University rules, through an online form on the college website, with seats subject to vacancy and eligibility. The college publishes a separate hostel prospectus for students who need residence on campus. Former students include S. Bir Davinder Singh, a former Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, and Suresh Arora, a former Director General of Police, Punjab.
