About Sphoorthy Engineering College
History and Background
About Sphoorthy Engineering College, Hyderabad Sphoorthy Engineering College, often shortened to SPHN, is on Sagar Road at Nadargul village in Balapur mandal, on the south-eastern side of Hyderabad near B N Reddy Nagar. It opened in 2004 under the Thoma Educational Society. Its chairman, Sri Chalama Reddy, taught mathematics before going into education management. He started Sphoorthy Degree and PG College in Dilsukhnagar in 1993 and later colleges of education, and the engineering college came after those. The college is now an autonomous institution. UGC granted it autonomous status, and NAAC has accredited it with an A grade. It ranked 8th for research and capabilities in the Times Engineering Survey 2022 for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Engineering seats are filled through the state counselling process, and the college puts out its own notification and application for Category B (management) seats every year. One thing that sets Sphoorthy apart is its NCC Air Wing unit, run under 1 Telangana Air Squadron since 2024. The college says it is the only engineering college in Hyderabad with an Air Wing flying branch. The unit has a sanctioned strength of 100 cadets, and students get drill, discipline training and a route towards a career in the armed forces alongside their B.Tech. Placement preparation runs through the year. The training and placement cell has worked with the ICT Academy and Infosys Foundation on a finishing-school programme, runs Wipro TalentNext training for final-year students, and brings companies to campus for drives. The college also hosts research events, including an international conference on frontier computing and sustainable engineering education.
