About Smt Maniben MP Shah Womens College of Arts and Commerce
History and Background
About Smt Maniben MP Shah Womens College of Arts and Commerce, Mumbai Smt. Maniben M.P. Shah Women's College of Arts and Commerce stands on R.A. Kidwai Road in Matunga, Mumbai, inside the Garodia educational complex run by the Seva Mandal Education Society (SMES). SMES was set up in 1957 to widen higher education for women, and this college was the first in Maharashtra to be affiliated to SNDT Women's University. The present building was inaugurated by V.V. Giri, then President of India. The college has been autonomous since June 2019, which lets it frame its own syllabi and examinations under SNDT Women's University. It was recognised by the UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence for 2016–17 to 2020–21 and was named Best College for 2017–18 by the university. In its third NAAC cycle it was accredited with a B++ grade (CGPA 2.88). Courses run in arts and commerce at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The B.A. is taught in English, and there is also a Marathi-medium B.A., with subjects that include Sociology, Psychology, Hindi and Marathi. The college was the first among SNDT colleges to start UGC vocational courses in computer applications, office management, and advertising and sales promotion. It was also the first to begin a self-financing degree in Management Studies, with specialisations in finance, human resources and marketing. The same campus houses the society's junior college, a home science college and a polytechnic, making it a large women-only campus from junior college to postgraduate level. Admissions open each year through the online admission page on the college website. The college has also worked with Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, on distance-mode degree and diploma courses.
