About SIES College of Arts Science and Commerce
History and Background
About SIES College of Arts Science and Commerce, Mumbai SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Sion (West), Mumbai, was inaugurated on 20 June 1960 by Y. B. Chavan, the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The South Indian Education Society set it up to serve students from the north and central suburbs of Mumbai, and described the college as a gift from the city's South Indian community to the new state. A degree-level commerce stream was added in 1980-81. The college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and now has Empowered Autonomous status, which lets it frame its own syllabus and exams under the NEP 2020 framework. More than 4,000 students study here. One of its early principals, Prof. Ram Joshi (1963-77), later became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai. SIES has a wide spread of departments across the three streams: Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry with Food Technology and Nutraceuticals Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Data Science Arts: English, Hindi, History, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology and Economics Commerce and professional: Commerce, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) Admissions to most first-year degree courses go through the college's own online process and merit lists. For BMS, seats are filled through CAP rounds, followed by an institute-level merit list and admission against vacant CAP seats. The college has an Institutional Research Advisory and Ethics Committee to guide research work by students and staff.
