About School of Planning & Architecture (SPA)

History and Background

About School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi The School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, grew out of two older units. The first was the Department of Architecture, set up in 1941 at the Delhi Polytechnic at Kashmere Gate, when wartime demand had exposed a shortage of trained architects. Walter George and his colleagues started it, and the first batch received national diplomas in architecture in 1950. The second was the School of Town and Country Planning, which the Government of India opened in 1955 following a First Five Year Plan recommendation. The planning school ran from rented rooms in Kapurthala House until its founder director, Prof. T.J. Manickam, secured land at Indraprastha Estate. Union Minister Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone of the planning campus on 26 May 1958. In 1959 the two units merged under the name School of Planning and Architecture, and by 1965 the architecture department had moved from Kashmere Gate to a campus also designed by Manickam. SPA was made a deemed university in 1979, and in 2015 an Act of Parliament declared it an Institution of National Importance under the Ministry of Education. Teaching covers architecture, planning and design at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. Some of the programmes are: B.Arch and B.Plan, plus an integrated Bachelor–Master of Planning M.Arch in Architectural Conservation, Landscape Architecture and other areas M.Plan in fields such as Environmental Planning Master of Building Engineering and Management, and Ph.D. programmes Undergraduate seats in architecture and planning are filled through JEE Main and central JoSAA counselling. Apart from its departments, the school runs research centres on climate change and human settlements, shared and electric mobility, urban biodiversity, and analysis and systems studies, along with an ENVIS environment information centre. Students can earn credits across departments, and from partner universities abroad under the school's MoUs. Visiting faculty and practising professionals add to the regular teaching staff.
