About Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT)
History and Background
About Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT), Mumbai SPIT is part of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's campus at Munshi Nagar in Andheri West, Mumbai. The campus covers about 47 acres and also houses Bhavan's College, Sardar Patel College of Engineering, S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, and A.H. Wadia High School. Students here share an auditorium, an open-air amphitheatre, a nature park and large sports grounds with those schools. SPIT started in 1995 as the self-financed wing of Sardar Patel College of Engineering, which Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan opened in 1962. In 2005 the wing moved into its own building and became a separate institute under the SPIT name. It is approved by AICTE and affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It now holds empowered autonomous status, so it sets its own curriculum and evaluation. SPIT is a non-minority, self-financing college. Its sister institute, SPCE, is government-aided and teaches civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. Undergraduate programmes at SPIT are in Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science), Computer Science and Engineering (AI and ML), and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. There are also postgraduate programmes, an MCA and PhD research. B.Tech seats are allotted through the Maharashtra CAP process using MHT CET or JEE Main scores. MCA admission uses MAH MCA CET, and M.Tech admission uses GATE. The institute has a DST-supported technology business incubator for student start-ups and runs one of the Nvidia GPU research centres in the country. In NIRF 2020 it was ranked 125th among engineering institutions.
