About RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata R. G. Kar Medical College grew out of a nationalist idea. In October 1886 Dr. Radha Gobinda Kar, just back from Britain, called a meeting of Indian doctors to start a medical school that would be independent of the official British institutions, and the Calcutta Medical School was founded that same year. It later merged with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal, and the combined institution opened as Belgachia Medical College in 1916, inaugurated by Lord Carmichael, the Governor of Bengal, with 48 students in its first batch. After Dr. Kar's death the college was renamed in his honour. It is now a West Bengal government medical college at 1 Khudiram Bose Sarani in north Kolkata, affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, with a large teaching hospital on the same campus.
