History and Background
About Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Kolkata Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira is a residential college at Belur Math, Howrah, on the west bank of the Hooghly across the river from north Kolkata. The Ramakrishna Mission started it in 1941 under its Saradapitha branch, as an Intermediate Arts college meant to put Swami Vivekananda's ideas on education into practice. Commerce subjects came in 1945 and science subjects in 1946, and from July 1960 it became a three-year degree college. Postgraduate teaching began in 2006-07 with Mathematics and Sanskrit, and more subjects were added over the next decade. UGC gave the college autonomous status from 2010-11 and renewed it in 2016. UGC has also twice named it a College with Potential for Excellence, in 2010 and 2014, and it has received DST-FIST support from the central government. NAAC accredited it in 2005 and re-accredited it in 2013. Research runs through the Swami Vivekananda Research Centre, which has been operating since 2013-14. Courses currently on offer: B.A. Honours in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science and Sanskrit B.Sc. Honours in Physics, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Microbiology and Zoology M.A. and M.Sc. in subjects such as Bengali, Sanskrit, Philosophy, History, Mathematics, Computer Science and Applied Chemistry Ph.D. in several of these subjects, plus a certificate course in photography and a tourism and travel department Admission is decided by the college itself. Applicants to the first-year degree course need to have passed the West Bengal Higher Secondary examination or an equivalent. They then sit a departmental admission test, an interview, or both, and their suitability for hostel life is also considered. Postgraduate applicants go through a similar test or interview. The college puts model questions from past admission tests online. Hostel life follows the Mission's routine, with a college uniform, rules on discipline, value-based training and shared dining. The campus also has canteens, a students' store and sports facilities.
