About Post Graduate College of Science - Osmania University
History and Background
About University College of Science, Saifabad (Post Graduate College of Science), Hyderabad The University College of Science, Saifabad, is a constituent college of Osmania University at Masab Tank in Hyderabad, at the foot of the Banjara Hills. The college was established in 1951. It started out offering only intermediate courses at Gulbarga, then part of the Nizam's state, before moving to Hyderabad. Nawab Ali Yavar Jung, then Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, secured the present Saifabad campus from the Hyderabad government. Known for years as Saifabad Science College, it was renamed Post Graduate College of Science in 1981 and University College of Science, Saifabad, in 2011–12. The campus covers about 18 acres of gardens and open sports ground, a quiet patch in a busy part of the city. Near the entrance stands a fossil conifer trunk of the Araucarioxylon species, around 175 million years old, presented by the Geological Survey of India. A new library building came up in 2003, and between 2003 and 2005 the college added a PG block for chemistry, physics, mathematics and biotechnology with a 120-seat seminar hall. Departments cover biotechnology, botany, chemistry, computer science, geology, languages, mathematics and statistics, physics and zoology. Programmes include: B.Sc. in MPC, MPCS and MPS combinations, and B.Sc. with biotechnology, botany, zoology and chemistry BCA M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Geology (since 1998–99), Botany, Biotechnology and Data Science MCA, offered since 2002–03 The college is co-educational. Undergraduate admission is entirely through DOST (Degree Online Services, Telangana), and leftover MCA seats are filled through spot admission. Students have access to a library, a placement cell, a women's cell, a health centre, sports and games, and NCC and NSS units.
