About Osmania University
History and Background
Osmania University, Hyderabad, is the state university on this record. Other Osmania college rows were not changed. The history page on https://www.osmania.ac.in/ says Nawab Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam, brought the university into existence by a firman dated 26 April 1917, on a proposal associated with Sir Akbar Hydari. The page calls it the seventh oldest university in the country and the third oldest in South India. Urdu was the first medium of instruction, with English compulsory. The year 1918 already stored, often used for the start of teaching, was left in place beside the 1917 firman date. The page says the university moved to the present campus in 1934 and that the Arts College was inaugurated in 1938. Departments begun in the first phase include Chemistry, Civil Engineering, English, History, Mathematics and Physics, with Law in 1923, Medicine in 1926-27 and Engineering in 1929.
