About New Alipore College
History and Background
About New Alipore College, Kolkata New Alipore College opened on 5 August 1963 as a government-sponsored college in L Block, New Alipore, in south Kolkata. It stands on a large plot owned by the Government of West Bengal. Its first building, a three-storey block put up by the Public Works Department, was later raised to four floors and is still the college's main building. The college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The first principal, Dr. Arun Kumar Bose, was a chemist, and he shaped much of the college's early growth. Teaching began with six departments: Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Philosophy and Mathematics. None of them offered honours at the start. Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Political Science followed by 1965. Honours teaching started in History, Political Science and Mathematics in 1967, the same year a morning shift opened to make room for extra science sections. In 1969 the college added Chemistry honours and an evening shift that brought in the Department of Commerce. Chemistry has remained the department the college is proudest of, and its students have a strong record in university results. Today New Alipore College offers undergraduate honours and general courses in arts, science and commerce under the University of Calcutta. Admission is done in phases each year, with notices for newly admitted first-semester students and University of Calcutta registration posted on the college website. The college also runs a student profile mapping system and publishes its establishment documents and best practices online.
