About National Institute of Design (NID)

History and Background

About National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad The National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad was set up in 1961 and is one of India's oldest design schools. It is a statutory body under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The National Institute of Design Act, 2014 declared it an Institution of National Importance. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research also recognises NID as a scientific and industrial research organisation. Ahmedabad is NID's main campus and the only one that runs the four-year Bachelor of Design. The postgraduate programme also uses the Gandhinagar and Bengaluru campuses. B.Des. in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessory Design, and Ceramic and Glass Design (Ahmedabad only) M.Des., a two-and-a-half-year programme in a wide range of specialisations, across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru Admission to both B.Des. and M.Des. is through NID's own Design Aptitude Test (DAT), which runs in two stages. Candidates first take the DAT Prelims, and those who qualify move on to the DAT Mains, whose format depends on the programme. NID publishes a separate admissions handbook for each programme every year with dates, seat details and eligibility. M.Des. Prelims are usually held in December. NID has also shaped how design is taught across India. Its publications include a book edited by the late I.S. Mathur on training design teachers, and the institute continues to hold exhibitions and discussions on drawing and on the future of design education.
