About National Dairy Research Institute - Karnal
History and Background
ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute is in Karnal, Haryana. It began in Bengaluru in 1923 as the Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry and Dairying, was renamed the Imperial Dairy Institute in 1936, and moved its headquarters to Karnal in 1955. It came under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in 1970 and has run its academic programmes as a deemed university since 1989. It also has regional stations at Bengaluru and Kalyani. NIRF 2025 ranked it 2nd in the agriculture and allied sectors category.
