About Medical College

History and Background

About Medical College, Kolkata Medical College, Kolkata, often called Calcutta Medical College and earlier known as Medical College, Bengal, is a government medical school and hospital at 88 College Street, near College Square. It was founded on 28 January 1835 to train young Indians in medicine regardless of caste or creed. It replaced the Native Medical Institution of 1822 after the Bentinck committee recommended a proper medical college. Admissions opened on 20 February 1835, and only twenty students were chosen from about a hundred applicants through a preliminary examination. The college's early years feature in the history of medical teaching in India. In January 1836, Madhusudan Gupta, a student of the first batch, carried out the first human dissection, and 10 January is now marked as Medical Education Day in West Bengal. The first batch sat its final examination in October 1838. In 1883 Kadambini Ganguly became the first woman admitted to the college. Alumni include Sir Nilratan Sarkar, U. N. Brahmachari and Bidhan Chandra Roy. Today the college runs the MBBS course along with postgraduate and super-speciality programmes, with admissions based on NEET counselling. Departments range from anatomy, biochemistry and microbiology to cardiac anaesthesiology, nephrology, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, medical oncology and onco-pathology. The official website reports a rank of 43 among medical colleges in NIRF 2022, and the college continues to submit NIRF data. It also has a Multidisciplinary Research Unit that invites research proposals and runs workshops on research methods. The campus stands on land donated by Motilal Seal in 1835. The oldest building is the Medical College and Hospital (MCH) building. Over the years the campus has added Eden Hospital, Ezra Hospital, the Shyama Charan Laha Eye Hospital and the Prince of Wales Surgical Block. During the pandemic, it was the first medical college in West Bengal to work as a fully dedicated COVID hospital.
