About Medical College
History and Background
Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, says it is Kerala's first medical college. The foundation stone was laid on 26 January 1950. The first students were admitted in August 1951, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated the college on 27 November 1951. Dr. C.O. Karunakaran was the first dean. The college is financed by the Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Kerala. It says it was first affiliated to the University of Kerala and, since 2010, to Kerala University of Health Sciences. The intake page lists sanctioned undergraduate seats of 250 for 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24, and postgraduate seats of 248 for 2021-22 through 2023-24. The about page says the college offers MBBS, MD/MS, DM/MCh, and several nursing, pharmacy, and paramedical courses. Medical College Hospital is described as a 1,950-bed hospital. Other units named on the site include Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, and a College of Pharmaceutical Sciences established in 1967.
