About Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College
History and Background
About Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, Madurai Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College was founded in 1974 by the Tamilnadu Naidu Mahajana Sangam, mainly to serve the educationally backward Telugu-speaking Naidu minority community. Then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi inaugurated it on 18 August 1974. It started with 153 pre-university students at Shri Rama Villas Mandapam in Shenoy Nagar and moved to its own campus at Pasumalai on 4 September 1979. It takes its name from Mannar Thirumalai Naicker, the best-known king in the region's past, and its campus now covers about 31.8 acres beside the national highway. The college is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University and is permanently recognised under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. Degree teaching began in 1979 with History, Mathematics and Physics. It became the first co-educational college in Madurai city in 1982, and commerce was added a year later. NAAC accredited it in 2006 and re-accredited it with an A grade in 2013. Autonomous status followed in 2015, and the college completed its third NAAC cycle in 2024. It has both aided and self-financed streams: Aided: B.A. English, History and Economics, B.Sc. Mathematics and Physics, B.Com, BBA, M.Com and M.Sc. Mathematics Self-financed: B.Com variants, BCA, BSW, B.Sc. Computer Science and its AI option, IT, Electronics and Communication, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Food Science and Nutrition, plus M.A., M.Sc., M.Com. (CA) and MSW programmes The college also runs research departments, starting with Commerce in 2009, followed by English and Mathematics. Admission to UG and PG courses is based on qualifying marks, following the college's reservation policy. The library opened in 1980 and moved into a 12,521 sq ft building in 2011. It holds over 62,000 books, NLIST and DELNET e-journals and material for visually impaired students. The campus also has a 7.48-acre playground, a gym, a health centre and a crèche, along with NSS, NCC, Youth Red Cross, a placement cell and a coaching centre for competitive exams.
