About Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women
History and Background
About Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, Bangalore In the early 1970s families in north Bangalore kept asking for a women's degree college close to home. A group of citizens led by Dr. K. N. V. Sastri, with Dr. M. N. Mahadevan as founder president, answered that demand in 1972. The college began with just 12 students, offering B.A. in History, Economics and Political Science, in rooms borrowed from a nearby government boys' school. Today it is widely known as mLAC and runs from its own campus on 18th Cross, Malleswaram. mLAC was affiliated to Bangalore University for most of its history and was granted autonomous status in 2016, which lets it design its own syllabus and conduct its own exams. It is now affiliated to Bengaluru City University and recognised by the Government of Karnataka. UGC has named it a College with Potential for Excellence, and its latest NAAC accreditation is an 'A' grade valid for 2022 to 2027. The college has grown well beyond its first three subjects. Courses now include: B.A., B.Com, BBM and BCA B.Sc in science combinations M.A. and M.Com M.Sc in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and other sciences Ph.D., including research in Kannada Undergraduate admission at mLAC is based on Class 12 or PUC marks through the college's own application process, and postgraduate seats follow its notified merit and entrance norms. Campus life includes an NCC Air Wing unit and a Women's Development Centre. It remains a women-only college at every level, from the first degree to the Ph.D.
