About Maharajas College - Ernakulam
History and Background
About Maharajas College - Ernakulam, Cochin Maharaja's College sits on a 25-acre campus in the centre of Kochi, within easy reach of the railway station, the metro and the boat jetties. Its story starts in 1845, when the princely state of Cochin opened an elementary English school here. That school became a high school in 1868 and a college in 1875, first called The Ernakulam College and affiliated to the University of Madras. It took the name Maharaja's College in its golden jubilee year, 1925, when it also began B.A. courses, built hostels and formed one of the oldest old students' associations in the country. The college is run by the Government of Kerala and is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. In 2014-15 it became an autonomous college, the first government college in Kerala to get that status. The state has named it a Centre of Excellence, and the UGC recognises it as a College with Potential for Excellence. NAAC accredited it with an A grade in 2006 and again in 2013, and in 2010 the DST picked all its science departments for support under the FIST scheme. Today 18 departments teach postgraduate programmes and 17 are approved research centres for the Ph.D. Undergraduate options run from the usual arts, science and commerce subjects to music and computer applications. In the 1990s the college added newer courses such as B.Sc Instrumentation and B.Sc Environment and Water Management. Admission to UG and PG seats is merit-based, and the college publishes its own provisional rank lists each year under the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) system. Gandhi visited the campus on 11 October 1927, and several of Kerala's political leaders began their public life here. The college has three hostels and a 15-acre playground with a synthetic track, and its students regularly finish at or near the top of the Mahatma Gandhi University youth festival.
