About M S Kakade College
History and Background
About M S Kakade College, Baramati Mugutrao Sahebrao Kakade College, better known as M.S. Kakade College, is at Someshwarnagar in the western part of Baramati taluka, Pune district. It was set up in 1972 and is named after its founder president, the late Shri Mugutrao Sahebrao Kakade. He was one of the leaders of Maharashtra's co-operative sugar movement and founded the Someshwar co-operative sugar factory in the same area. As a rural college in Pune district, it works under Savitribai Phule Pune University. The college grew out of the sugar co-operative's prosperity. Kakade and his colleagues believed that the income sugarcane brought to local farmers should be matched by higher education for their children. At the time, this part of Baramati was dry and lagged behind economically and in education. That history still shapes how the college admits students. Its stated policy is to admit every student who has passed the qualifying examination and wants to continue studying, including those from socially and economically weaker groups. The management gives financial help and fee concessions to students who cannot afford the full fees, so that money does not stop anyone from getting a degree. The college teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses for students from Someshwarnagar, Nira and the surrounding villages. Its motto in Marathi, "Rashtriya charitryache yuvak ghadavine", speaks of shaping young people of good national character. The college aims to use information and communication technology in both teaching and administration, and it collects regular feedback from students, staff, alumni and other stakeholders to review its work. Its stated objectives include making students ready for a global setting while keeping them rooted in the social, cultural and economic realities of rural Maharashtra.
