About Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce & Economics (LLCC)
History and Background
About Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce & Economics (LLCC), Mumbai Lala Lajpatrai College of Commerce and Economics opened in the 1972-73 academic year on Lala Lajpatrai Marg at Mahalaxmi, in south-central Mumbai. It is named after the freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. The building came first: a trust took land on lease from the government in 1959, put up a seven-storey building, and in February 1972 leased it to the Lala Lajpatrai Institute to start a college. The college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and now conducts its own examinations as an autonomous college. It has gone through four cycles of NAAC assessment, and in November 2007 it received Punjabi linguistic minority status. The same institute also runs the Lala Lajpatrai Institute of Management, started in 1995, and a law college that has offered the LLB since 2005. Commerce has always been the core subject. Postgraduate teaching began in 2001-02 with an M.Com in Business Management and Advanced Accountancy, and the self-financing degree courses that Mumbai students know well were added from 1999 onwards: B.Com BMS (Management Studies) BAF (Accounting and Finance) and BBI (Banking and Insurance) BFM (Financial Markets) BMM (Mass Media) B.Sc IT and B.Sc Computer Science M.Com and Ph.D. in Commerce A research centre in Commerce and in Trade, Transport and Industry was set up in 2015. Admission to first-year degree courses is based on Class 12 marks through the college's merit lists. Students get exposure beyond the classroom through an international MoU with Dhurakij Pundit University in Bangkok, a German exchange programme run with the Rotary Club, study tours, and outreach work through NSS, DLLE and the Women's Development Cell. The college also offers add-on vocational and certificate courses.
