About Lady Irwin College
History and Background
About Lady Irwin College, Delhi Lady Irwin College is a women's college of the University of Delhi on Sikandra Road, near Mandi House in central New Delhi. It opened in 1932 with just 11 students and a one-year course, under the patronage of Lady Dorothy Irwin. Its founders included Sarojini Naidu, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Annie Besant, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and the Maharanis of Baroda and Bhopal. Mahatma Gandhi gave the college its motto, "Vidya Hi Sewa", meaning service through knowledge. The red-brick campus covers about 16.5 acres, and its buildings are protected as heritage sites. The college specialises in Home Science and related applied fields, with more than 1,300 students enrolled. NAAC accredited it with an A+ grade in 2025, and it ranked 31st among colleges in NIRF 2025. Courses on offer: B.Sc. (Hons.) Home Science, B.Sc. (Pass) Home Science, B.Sc. (Hons.) Food Technology, and a four-year Bachelor's in Nutrition and Dietetics (Hons.) B.Ed. and B.Ed. Special Education (Intellectual Disability) M.Sc. in Food and Nutrition, Development Communication and Extension, Human Development and Childhood Studies, Resource Management and Design Application, and Fabric and Apparel Science Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition, and a Ph.D. in all five Home Science areas Admission to the undergraduate science courses is based on CUET-UG scores, using the subject combinations the college sets for each course. B.Ed. and postgraduate admissions follow Delhi University's own processes. The campus has laboratories, a library of about 53,000 books and periodicals, courts for tennis, badminton, basketball and volleyball, and a hostel for about 200 undergraduate and postgraduate women. A laboratory pre-school and childcare centre, which includes children with disabilities, works alongside the Human Development department. Students also do community work through NSS, with a focus on adult literacy. Art galleries, theatres and the Mandi House Metro station are all within about a kilometre.
