About Kongunadu Arts and Science College
History and Background
About Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore Kongunadu Arts and Science College (KASC) began classes on 12 August 1973 in the G.N. Mills area of north Coimbatore. The idea took shape a year earlier, at a Saraswathi Pooja function of the Thudiyalur Cooperative Agricultural Services, where farmer and former MLA V.K. Lakshmanan and Dr M. Aruchami spoke about starting a college for the region. The cooperative gave about Rs 75,000, a sum that included the dividend of some 16,000 farmers, and local donors added more. Dr Aruchami went on to serve as the first principal and later as secretary and president of the college council. That farming background still shapes the college's stated aims, which include giving preference to students from rural and agricultural families and keeping fees within reach. KASC is an autonomous college affiliated to Bharathiar University. NAAC has re-accredited it with an A+ grade in its fourth cycle, and the UGC has recognised it as a College of Excellence. It is also listed as a DBT-STAR college. Courses are offered in both aided and self-financing streams. The undergraduate list covers: B.A. English Literature B.Sc. programmes, including Computer Science with Data Analytics and Computer Technology B.Com, BBA and BCA M.A., M.Sc., M.Com, MCA and MBA, with M.Phil. and Ph.D. research Science departments have built up research equipment over the years. One department, for example, has received DST-FIST support since 2002, which paid first for a computer lab and later for powder XRD, FTIR and single-crystal XRD facilities, the last under a DST-PURSE grant. The college runs its own semester examinations through a Controller of Examinations office, and admissions to the aided and unaided programmes are handled directly by the college each year.
