About KLE Society’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (KLE JNMC), Belgaum Northern Karnataka had very few medical facilities in the early 1960s, and that gap is what pushed the KLE Society to open Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Belgaum (Belagavi) in 1963. The society itself dates from 1916, when seven teachers and three patrons started it to spread education in the region, and it now runs more than 200 institutions. Dr. B. S. Jirge was the founding dean of JNMC. Today the college is a constituent unit of KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (KAHER), a deemed to be university set up on 13 April 2006 through a Government of India notification on UGC's recommendation. The university's offices sit on the JNMC campus at Nehru Nagar, so students study at the centre of the KAHER system. The first MBBS batch was admitted after permission in 1964, and the annual MBBS intake is now 200 seats. Clinical teaching happens across several hospitals. The KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre handles tertiary care, while the 1,000-bed Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital treats patients free of cost and is used mainly for training undergraduates and postgraduates. Three primary health centres and an urban health centre give students community postings. Programmes include: MBBS MD in subjects such as Anaesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine MS in surgical branches Super speciality and fellowship courses MBBS admission at KLE JNMC Belgaum is based on NEET-UG, and MD and MS seats are filled through NEET-PG. The college has a long research link with the University of Illinois in the US and runs a Women's and Children's Health Research Unit focused on maternal and newborn health. JNMC has also appeared in the NIRF medical rankings.
