About King George Medical University
History and Background
About King George Medical University, Lucknow King George's Medical University (KGMU) traces its start to 1905, and the foundation stone was laid in 1906 by the Prince of Wales during his visit to India. With his consent the institution was named after him once he became King George V. For most of the twentieth century it was known as King George's Medical College, and it is still one of the best-known medical institutions in north India. KGMU is a state medical university of Uttar Pradesh, located on Shah Mina Road in the Chowk area of old Lucknow, close to the Gomti. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh is its Chancellor. It is accredited by NAAC with an A++ grade, and apart from teaching its own students it also conducts examinations for a number of affiliated medical colleges in the state. KGMU has been placed among the top medical institutions in the NIRF rankings. Teaching covers the full range of medical and health education: MBBS and BDS MD, MS and MDS in clinical, pre-clinical and dental subjects Super speciality DM and M.Ch courses Bachelor's courses in allied health, including B.Sc Optometry Paramedical diplomas in allied and healthcare sciences MBBS and BDS seats are filled from NEET-UG scores through counselling, and postgraduate seats through NEET-PG. Admission to bachelor's and paramedical diploma courses is handled by the university itself, with separate notices and document verification rounds published on its website each year. Large teaching hospitals on campus give students heavy clinical exposure, and services such as the Poison Information Centre and the KGMU Eye Bank run round the clock.
