About Kavitha Memorial Degree College
History and Background
About Kavitha Memorial Degree College, Khammam Kavitha Memorial Degree College (KMDC) opened in 1991 on Narasimha Swami Temple Road, Nehru Nagar, in the middle of Khammam town. It was set up by the Sri Kavitha Educational Society, which was registered the same year under the Public Societies Registration Act 1350 Fasli. The degree campus sits on about an acre, with roughly 60,000 sq ft of built-up space. In 1997 Kakatiya University granted the college permanent affiliation, and UGC recognised it under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) the same year. It is accredited by NAAC with a B grade. KMDC says it was the first college in Khammam district to offer Computer Science at undergraduate level. Statistics, B.Com (Computer Applications), BA, BBA, and B.Sc combinations with Electronics, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology followed. A UGC grant helped the college set up a biotechnology laboratory. The same society runs Kavitha Memorial PG College, started in 1993-94, which offers M.Sc in Mathematics, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Organic Chemistry and Microbiology, along with M.Com. MBA and MCA are taught on a separate five-acre campus at Velugumatla, about 6 km away. Admission to the degree courses follows Kakatiya University and Telangana state rules for affiliated colleges. The college lists its UG courses and fees on its website. Its website also lists IGNOU programmes for distance learners. Facilities include laboratories, a library with e-resources, a reading room, a computer centre, a ladies' waiting room, a canteen and ICT-enabled classrooms. Students can join NCC, NSS, the Youth Red Cross and the Red Ribbon Club, and they make industrial and institutional visits. The college also has a placement cell, a career guidance bureau and an alumni association. The society also runs the Khammam Institute of Technology and Sciences at Ponnekal.
