About Jamia Hamdard University, Delhi Jamia Hamdard traces its roots to a small Unani clinic that Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed opened in Delhi in 1906 under the name Hamdard, meaning sympathy for all. His son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, built a group of institutions on land at Tughlakabad in south Delhi. The first was the Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research, whose foundation stone Jawaharlal Nehru laid on 15 November 1962. These institutions were brought together as Jamia Hamdard, which became a deemed-to-be university on 10 May 1989 and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The 94-acre campus at Hamdard Nagar sits near the Jahanpanah forest, next to Tughlakabad Fort. Teaching is spread across schools of pharmacy, chemical and life sciences, humanities and social sciences, nursing and allied health, Unani medicine, interdisciplinary sciences, management, engineering and law, along with a medical school (HIMSR), a centre for mass media studies and a distance education centre. The university runs two hospitals, a 700-bed modern medicine hospital and a 100-bed Unani hospital. The pharmacy school has the best ranking record. The School of Pharmaceutical Education and Research began as Hamdard College of Pharmacy in 1972 and was ranked first in the NIRF pharmacy list in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024, and second in 2023. NAAC first accredited Jamia Hamdard in 2003 and, in its fourth cycle, gave it an A+ grade with a score of 3.41. Admission routes depend on the course. B.Tech seats are filled on JEE (Main) Paper 1 merit, several programmes use CUET scores, and MBBS admission follows NEET through counselling. Other courses, such as B.Pharm, BBA, BCA, BHM, law and nursing, follow the eligibility and selection rules set out in the university's prospectus each year. Ph.D. admissions are notified separately, and candidates who have qualified NET or JRF are exempt from the entrance test.
