History and Background
About International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Bangalore IIIT Bangalore, or IIIT-B, is a deemed university on Hosur Road in Electronics City, Bengaluru, with an extension campus on Hosa Road. It was set up in 1998 as a not-for-profit society, and the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry fund it together. That mix shows in how it works: companies sit on its industry advisory board, while the institute keeps the academic freedom of a university. The institute has four departments: Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Digital Humanities and Societal Systems, plus a Centre for Applied Sciences. Its programmes are: B.Tech and the five-year Integrated M.Tech M.Tech and M.Sc (Digital Society) Master of Science by Research, Integrated Ph.D. and Ph.D. PG Diploma in Digital Product Design and Management, a 12-month course where a valid CAT or CEED score can exempt candidates from the written test Research at IIIT-B often deals with public technology as well as theory. The campus hosts MOSIP, an open-source platform for national digital ID systems, along with the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure, the E-Health Research Centre, a robotics centre of excellence and the Centre for IT and Public Policy. Smaller labs work on wireless communication, speech, VLSI systems, remote sensing and assistive robotics. The institute holds an annual open house called RISE to show student and faculty research to industry and the public. It also runs continuing education and online programmes for working professionals alongside its regular degrees.
