About Institute of Road & Transport Technology
History and Background
About Institute of Road & Transport Technology, Erode The Institute of Road and Transport Technology (IRTT) opened in 1984 as an engineering college with a research focus on automobiles. It ran under the Institute of Road and Transport, a body of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. The college was meant to serve students from poorer families, and that aim shaped how it was set up. The name and management changed in 2021. On 26 August that year, the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister told the Legislative Assembly that the government would take over IRTT and run it directly through the Directorate of Technical Education. It has since been renamed Government College of Engineering, Erode. Applicants will now find it under that name. It is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The campus covers about 200 acres. It is half a kilometre from NH-47 between Bhavani and Chithode and about 15 km from Erode railway station. B.E. and B.Tech programmes include: Automobile Engineering, the branch closest to the college's original purpose Mechanical and Civil Engineering Computer Science and Engineering and Information Technology Electronics and Communication, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering The college also offers postgraduate engineering programmes. Undergraduate seats are filled through TNEA counselling, which ranks students on Class 12 marks. Postgraduate admission uses TANCET scores. The college's stated goals include engineering teaching, research and development, and encouraging students to start their own ventures.
