About Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research, Kolkata IPGMER is the teaching institute attached to SSKM Hospital, which most people in Kolkata still call PG Hospital, at 244 A.J.C. Bose Road in Bhowanipore. In the 1950s Indian doctors usually had to go abroad for postgraduate training, and the government decided to open specialised PG centres at home. On 16 January 1957 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the hospital as the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, the first such institute in eastern India. For decades IPGMER worked only as a super speciality referral hospital and postgraduate school. Over time several specialised units were added on the same campus, including the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences, the Institute of Psychiatry, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and a respiratory care unit. A nursing school and a nursing college followed, along with undergraduate physiotherapy and paramedical courses, and the institute now also admits MBBS students. It is a West Bengal government institution, and its courses run at every level of medical education: MBBS MD and MS in a wide range of clinical and pre-clinical subjects Post-doctoral DM and M.Ch super speciality degrees B.Sc and M.Sc Nursing, physiotherapy and paramedical courses MBBS admission is through NEET-UG. Seats are split between the all-India quota, filled through central counselling, and the West Bengal state quota, filled through state counselling, and IPGMER publishes separate reporting schedules for each. Postgraduate and super speciality seats are filled through NEET-PG and NEET-SS. Because SSKM is a major referral hospital for the whole of eastern India, students at IPGMER Kolkata see a very large and varied patient load.
