History and Background

About Institute of Hotel Management Catering and Applied Nutrition, Bangalore The Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Bangalore is a central government hotel school, set up as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. It works out of the S.J. Polytechnic campus on Seshadri Road, near the M.S. Building in central Bengaluru. Like the other central IHMs, it is affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), Noida, which sets the syllabus and conducts examinations. Degrees are awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Admission to the three-year B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration is through the NCHM JEE, the national entrance test for NCHMCT institutes, followed by counselling. Diploma and craft courses have their own admission notice each year. IHM Bangalore offers courses at three levels, from postgraduate study down to short job-oriented certificates: M.Sc. in Hospitality Administration B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration Diploma in Food Production and Diploma in Bakery and Confectionery Craftsmanship Certificate Course in Food Production and Patisserie Craft Course in Food and Beverage Service The craft courses last about a year and a half: two teaching semesters of 17 weeks followed by 20 weeks of industrial training. They are meant for students who want to start work quickly as cooks, stewards or waiters in hotels, resorts, fast food outlets, facility management firms or on cruise ships. Practical training at the institute takes place in its food production kitchens, a food and beverage service lab and a rooms division lab. There is also a computer lab, a library, a hostel and sports facilities. A training and placement cell links students with hotels and other hospitality employers, and an entrepreneurship development cell supports students interested in starting their own ventures.
