History and Background
About Institute of Architecture, Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, Patan The Institute of Architecture is a teaching department of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (HNGU), based on the university campus on University Road in Patan. It runs as a grant-in-aid department of the university. The Council of Architecture lists the institute as an approved school of architecture, with approval dating from 2008. The university itself was created in 1986, first by an ordinance on 17 May and then by the North Gujarat University Act passed by the Gujarat Legislative Assembly that September. It was carved out of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, and had to start without any buildings of its own, working at first from rented hostel blocks of local colleges. Patan was chosen as its headquarters for its history as the old Solanki capital and a centre of Jain scholarship linked with the scholar Hemchandracharya, after whom the university is named. Its jurisdiction covers Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts. The institute offers two programmes: Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), a five-year course with 40 seats in the government (aided) category Master of Planning in Urban and Regional Planning, a self-financing course with 17 seats B.Arch admission follows Council of Architecture eligibility rules, which require a qualifying 10+2 result and a valid score in a national architecture aptitude test, with seats allotted through the state's admission process. Students can use the HNGU central library, which holds more than 92,000 books across science, humanities, architecture, commerce, law and other subjects and has quiet reading space for study and research.
