About Holy Cross Education Trust College
History and Background
About Holy Cross Education Trust College, Trichy Holy Cross College in Tiruchirappalli, run under the Holy Cross education society, has its roots in 1902, when Mother Sophie, a French missionary, opened a primary school with five girls. The college itself followed in 1923, at a time when sending women to college was still unusual. It sits near Teppakulam in the heart of the Rock City, close to the Cauvery, and is managed by the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, Province of Tiruchirappalli. The college is affiliated to Bharathidasan University and became autonomous in June 1987. It was the first college in that university to adopt the Choice Based Credit System. NAAC gave it five stars in 1999, an 'A' grade in 2005, an 'A' grade with CGPA 3.50 in 2012, and an A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.75 in February 2020. In NIRF 2025 it was ranked 52nd among colleges in India. Holy Cross is a Catholic minority college for women, but it admits students of every caste, creed and state. Programmes include: B.A. and M.A. in humanities and languages B.Sc and M.Sc in sciences BBA and BCA MCA Master of Social Work M.Phil and Ph.D. Admission to undergraduate courses is based on Class 12 marks through the college's own application, with priority for Catholic students, since the college is meant primarily for that community. Postgraduate seats are filled on degree marks, and the MCA follows TANCET norms. The college also has a Department of Social Work and a Computer Applications department that runs the MCA.
