About Hislop College
History and Background
About Hislop College, Nagpur Hislop College on Temple Road, Civil Lines, Nagpur, is the oldest college in the Vidarbha region. It was founded in 1883 in the Mahal area of Nagpur, with a principal, Rev. J. G. Cooper, and six professors. Its roots go back further, to 1846, when the Scottish missionary Rev. Stephen Hislop opened a boys' school in old Nagpur with 30 students. Hislop, who was also a geologist and learnt Marathi in 15 months, drowned in the Bori river near Takalghat in 1863. The college was affiliated first to Calcutta University, then to Allahabad University, and to Nagpur University after that university was set up in 1924, which means Hislop is older than the university it now belongs to. Control passed from the Foreign Mission of the Church of Scotland to Indian hands in 1941. Today the Hislop Education Society runs the college under the Church of North India Synod. Over 4,000 students study here each year in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across arts, science and commerce. Hislop started a Journalism Department in 1954, the first in the region, and it also teaches subjects such as Biochemistry at degree level. Undergraduate admission is online, based on Class 12 results and the rules of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University. Ph.D. admission has a separate procedure. In 2015 the UGC listed Hislop among 19 colleges in the country given Heritage status. NAAC re-accredited it with an A grade (CGPA 3.31) in 2016 and again with an A grade (CGPA 3.20) in 2023. The college celebrated its 125th year in 2009, and in 2017 it marked 200 years since the birth of its founder.
