About Guru Shree Shantivijay Jain College for Women
History and Background
About Guru Shree Shantivijay Jain College for Women, Chennai Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women (GSSJ) is on Vepery High Road in Chennai. It is run by the Shree Mahaveer Jain Kalyan Sangh, a voluntary Jain charitable association set up in 1967 for education and social work. The college is named after the Jain saint Yogiraj Guru Shree Shanti Vijaiji Maharaj, and its regular day college started in 1991. It is a self-financing women's college approved by the Tamil Nadu government and affiliated to the University of Madras. It has been re-accredited by NAAC and is administered as a religious and linguistic Jain minority institution. Commerce has been the main strength of the college from the start. B.Com (General) dates from 1991, BBA from 2000 and B.Sc Computer Science from 1995. Newer courses include B.Com Accounting and Finance (2019) and B.Com Computer Application (2024). The full list is: B.Com General, Accounting and Finance, Corporate Secretaryship, and Computer Application BBA B.Sc Computer Science, and Computer Science with AI or Data Science M.Com Application forms can be collected at the college office or filled in online. Admission is completed after a personal interview. Students from CBSE can apply to commerce courses with Business Studies, while those from other boards need a University of Madras eligibility certificate. Every first-year undergraduate takes Tamil or Hindi as the language paper. Classes run in two shifts, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Students can apply for government scholarships such as NSP, SC/ST awards and Pudumai Penn, as well as Jain merit and management scholarships. The placement cell runs recruitment drives, mock interviews and skill sessions. Departments hold their own inter- and intra-collegiate events and industrial visits. The Corporate Secretaryship department has run career counselling with the ICSI.
