About Government Medical College (GMCH), Chandigarh Chandigarh had Panjab University and PGIMER, but until 1991 it had no undergraduate medical college of its own. The Chandigarh Administration set up Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 to fill that gap, and the first batch of 50 MBBS students joined in August 1991. The intake was raised to 100 seats from 2013. GMCH is a government institution, and its MBBS examinations are conducted by Panjab University. The first batch sat its final MBBS exams in January 1996 and finished the compulsory rotating internship a year later. The college is attached to its own teaching hospital in Sector 32, and the administration also runs a hospital at the South Campus in Sector 48. Courses run at undergraduate and postgraduate level: MBBS MD and MS in clinical and pre-clinical departments such as Anaesthesiology, Anatomy and Medicine B.Sc Nursing B.Sc Allied Health Sciences, including Medical Lab Technology Seats are given purely on merit through a competitive exam, which today means NEET-UG for MBBS and NEET-PG for MD and MS. The college publishes merit-wise and category-wise admission lists for both UG and PG on its website. GMCH Chandigarh also runs short training courses, such as the Trauma and Emergency Life Support programme started in 2012 and cardiac life support courses, which are open to doctors and health staff.
